CHAPTER 16
Later that afternoon, Kelly heard Tedâs car pull up and stop in front of Julieâs house. She walked out to meet him and together the two of them walked up to the front door of the main house and knocked. âWho is it?â Alessia asked a moment later.
âItâs Ted and Kelly, Alessia.â
The door opened and Alessia gave Ted a hug while Casey stood looking at him. Since sheâd hugged him, Casey was calm, but Kelly had the feeling that if there had been any hesitancy on her part, Casey would have assumed command of the situation.
âAnd who do we have here?â Ted asked as he knelt down and petted the big dog. Casey looked him over before seeking reassurance from Alessia who nodded, and then he put his right paw up. Ted, smiling, met his paw with a gentle fist bump. âWell, I can see that my nephew has done his usual good job with this one.â Ted rose to his feet. âWhat do you think, Alessia?â
âQuite honestly, Ted, Iâd give anything if Iâd gotten Casey under different circumstances, but now that I have him, I couldnât be happier. And quite frankly, itâs not just the guard dog thing. Heâs just a great companion. It may get old in the future, but right now it makes me feel very comfortable to have this guy with me everywhere I go.
âIâve drawn the line at the bathroom. I close the door, but when I open it, heâs laying right in front of it. That might take some getting used to. Letâs go in the kitchen and Iâll get us some coffee, or if youâd like I have the inside track to some great wines.â
âCoffee for me,â Kelly said. âWeâre going out to dinner tonight so Iâll save my alcohol ration for that.â
âIâll take coffee as well,â Ted said.
âTed, Iâd like you to be very involved in everything having to do with Julieâs funeral,â Alessia said, when sheâd finished preparing the coffee and they were seated around the old wooden kitchen table. âAs you know, Julie and I are, were, Catholic. Iâve talked to Father Damon and if itâs all right with you, Iâd like to have the funeral as soon as possible.
âI donât like long drawn-out times between deaths and funerals. He said we could have a morning funeral with Mass the day after tomorrow. I told him that was fine, but I wanted to dispense with the vigil. Given the way she died, and so many others have suffered a similar fate, I think it would become a maudlin thing. What do you think?â
âI agree,â Ted said. âI can get the word out to members of the wine industry. Why donât you call the Sonoma Index-Tribune and have them publish the details?â
âIâll do that when you leave. I was thinking about having something here at the winery after the service. Father Damon said we could have the service at 10:30 in the morning. The church is in town and then I thought people could come here afterwards.
